Energy efficiency and NRGLab

Energy efficiency is progressively becoming more impactful on consumer decision making. Whether it’s the average miles per gallon of a new car, or the size of a house you’re considering buying, in today’s economy, every penny matters. So why throw them away due to energy IN-efficiency?

A high energy-efficiency rating, or EER, can save homeowner’s money on each month’s utility bills. Last year, a global EER survey found that 44% of people wanted more green-building certification approvals. But in order to push through with wide-spread energy renovations, we must combine the two indexes currently in use: the Operational-Rating System, and the Asset-Rating System. Here’s why:
The ORS takes a building’s past energy bills and square foot measurements and calculates a percentile rating. This allows companies to know exactly how efficient their current properties are. Since 2008, two states and a handful of U.S. cities have relied on this system. To the layperson, the ORS sounds legitimate. However, it has one obvious flaw: how can you compare a structure built back in the 1950s to one from the 21st Century? They’re comprised of different materials. Modeled after different architectural styles. In other words: it’s like comparing apples to oranges.  

And that’s exactly why experts developed the Asset-Rating System. The ARS analyzes a building’s energy infrastructure and future potential. In newer buildings, this demonstrates to prospective buyers how best to maximize the system. As soon as the building is operational though, the ORS becomes crucial, since it flags owners who knowingly waste energy.
Clay Nesler, vice-president for the building efficiency division of Johnson Controls, a corporation that focuses on energy efficiency, claims that EERs should be seen “as one of a number of tools that when combined with other policies can really drive greater investment in energy efficiency.”

Well, luckily some countries like Australia have been able to wrap their heads around it. They only rent from buildings with high EERs. And since the Australian government leases more space than any other private business, buildings with lower ratings decrease in market value.
In 2010, the European Union passed the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, legislation which requires all states to raise their standards of efficiency. In last year’s EER survey, respondents favored tax incentives and rebates for buildings with high EERs, versus government investment in renovation and restoration.
By combining the two energy-efficiency ratings, governments can essentially help more businesses pass green certification, while enticing others to follow suit.

Bisnis Global Telah Membuat Konsumen Menjadi “Otomatis Tersihir” Seperti Zombie

Yang namanya bisnis global, pasti berkaitan dengan ekspansi, karena pada hakikatnya bisnis itu selalu mencari pasar baru. Kerap kali, pasar-pasar baru ditemukan pada rumah tangga kebanyakan yang telah kehilangan keuntungan ekonomi sejak era perang. Alih-alih mendukung kerja sama ekonomi, para pemimpin dunia justru mendukung kehidupan yang saling menghancurkan. (http://gt2030.com). Artinya, kalau mereka tidak mau bekerja sama,   bagaimana bisnis global bisa bertahan?


Tahun 1981, Presiden Ronald Reagen menandatangani undang-undang yang memungkinkan para konsumen mengonsolidasikan utang-utang mereka, yaitu dengan mengambil pinjaman baru untuk melunasi utang-utang lama. Terjadilah gelombang iklan masal yang mengajak masyarakat ‘berutang’  demi mendapatkan barang-barang yang sebenarnya tidak mampu mereka beli.

Bisnis-bisnis mulai meyakinkan rumah-rumah tangga untuk mengambil lebih banyak pinjaman, dan membiarkan urusan konsolidasi utang menjadi masalah belakangan. Para operator ponsel menciptakan kebutuhan (semu) untuk terus berkomunikasi tanpa henti. Perusahaan-perusahaan farmasi memaksa pasien-pasien untuk menelan berbagai pil untuk setiap gejala kesehatan kecil sekalipun. Pabrik-pabrik garmen membuat orang-orang tertarik untuk membeli pakaian-pakaian baru untuk setiap musim. Pada praktiknya, setiap orang mengambil pinjaman dari bank untuk membeli sesuatu yang mereka tidak perlukan, atau dengan kata lain menyerahkan uang yang mereka hasilkan dengan susah payah kembali ke bank.

Pemasaran menjadi alat yang sangat mujarab. Penelitian telah membuktikan bahwa emosi, kata-kata, dan gambar mempunyai kemampuan untuk membujuk konsumen agar mau membeli, membeli, dan MEMBELI! Mengapa tidak ada pemasaran di abad ke-19 silam? Karena waktu itu, pasokan barang-barang ada sesuai dengan besarnya permintaan nyata. Tidak ada ilusi “ingin”.  Waktu itu yang ada hanyalah kebutuhan untuk bertahan hidup.

Rasionalitas, berpikir kritis, dan pengetahuan ilmiah adalah musuh-musuh bisnis global. Karena semua itu mencegah konsumen mengambil pinjaman yang tidak perlu, sehingga mengakibatkan terhambatnya ekspansi ekonomi. Karena itulah, sekitar tiga puluh tahun lalu, berbagai bisnis muncul untuk menciptakan konsumen ideal – yang tidak rasional dan tidak bisa berpikir untuk diri mereka sendiri.

Sekarang sudah banyak konsumen ideal tersebut. Nyatanya mereka ada di mana-mana! Mereka mencintai hidup yang dikelabui hanya dengan emosi dan hasrat untuk mendapatkan sesuatu yang baru semata. Melahap apapun demi popularitas sesaat. Mereka ceria, positif, dinamis, dan siap membeli apapun yang “terbaru dan terhebat”. Yang parahnya lagi, mereka tidak menyadari perilaku “otomatis tersihir” seperti zombie ini!

Secara perlahan-lahan, media massa membesarkan konsumen ideal ini. Iklan radio dan TV. Penempatan produk dalam film-film. Semuanya dimulai dari anak-anak usia sekolah dengan kartun dan komik, lalu beralih ke dunia dewasa dengan berlangganan majalah yang mengarahkan persepsi orang tentang dunia. Ada banyak iklan tentang pakaian mahal dan aksesoris. Parfum dan kolonye. Semua yang dibutuhkan orang untuk menjadi “cantik” dan “bahagia”.

NRGLab mengirimkan banyak proposal bisnis ke para manajer perusahaan-perusahaan di seluruh dunia, sayangnya, sembilan dari sepuluh proposal jatuh ke tangan antek-antek kelas bawah yang tidak bisa melihat potensi keuntungan besar di depan mata mereka. Mereka malas dan tidak termotivasi. “Siapa peduli dengan energi ramah lingkungan?” Pada dasarnya, kalau itu bukan ponsel cerdas baru yang mentereng atau aplikasi iPhone gratis, akan sulit menarik perhatian orang.
       
Tidak seperti para manajer di negara-negara maju, para manajer di negara-negara berkembang lebih berpikiran terbuka. Mereka mampu melihat keuntungan-keuntungan dari proposal bisnis kami. Mereka belum menjadi mangsa mentalitas konsumen. Mereka masih rasional dan hidup dengan warisan dan budaya mereka sendiri.  Padahal, pusat industri dan komersial bakal segera muncul di negara-negara berkembang. Lalu apa yang bakal terjadi?  Akankah mereka bersiap untuk “progres”?

The plague could be coming! Global warming to blame

When people hear “global warming,” they usually think melting ice caps, rising sea levels, and superstorms. But did you know that global warming also makes it easier for diseases to spread? That’s right - the next plague could be looming on the horizon. And the last one took millions of lives!



Bacteria and parasites thrive in warmer temperatures, making them somewhat seasonal in a certain parts of the world. But not anymore. Longer summers mean longer lifespans. More contagious diseases. And “there [are] A LOT of diseases,” stresses Sonia Altizer, an associate professor at the University of Georgia. “Especially in natural systems, where there as a pretty clear signal that either the prevalence or severity of those diseases has increased in response to climate change.”

Altizer is co-author of a recently published study on climate trends over the last decade.  She continues:

“So in the arctic, there are parasitic worms that affect muskox and reindeer that are developing faster and becoming more prevalent and expanding their ranges. And then in tropical oceans, like Caribbean coral reefs, there’s a large amount of evidence that has mounted that shows that warming interferes with the symbiosis of corals – makes them more vulnerable to disease and at the same time increases the growth rate of some lethal bacteria.”

So no matter where you live – in a warm climate, or chilly – no one is safe from bacteria. Thankfully, we have studies like Altizer’s to help us prepare for the future.

“Knowing why different pathogens respond differently to climate change is what’s needed to help us predict and ultimately manage disease outbreaks in people and animals and plants,” she says.

Some continents are much more equipped to handle the next plague than others, like North America and Europe, who have “surveillance, vector control, modern sanitation, drugs, and vaccines. [They] can be deployed to prevent outbreaks of a lot of diseases, especially vector borne disease or diarrheal disease that are much more problematic in the developing world. And so these can counter the effects of climate change and make it hard to detect increases in those pathogens,” says Altizer.

“Controlling vectors” refers to controlling parasites like ticks and mosquitos, which have been known to transmit yellow fever and malaria.
In developing countries, a pathogenic outbreak could destroy the agricultural economy. Lost crops. Dead cattle. The livelihoods of farmers and their families are at stake.

How concerned should we be? Well, according to Altizer, the answer isn’t exactly black and white.

“It really depends on the location. Where, when and what pathogen? So I think we’re at a stage now where in the next five to ten years scientists will be able to move towards a predictive framework that will be able to answer questions about where in the world and what pathogens are responding and will continue to respond most strongly to climate change.”

The effects of global warming are unfolding slowly, and should stretch decades, making it crucial to document and analyze data.

Beberapa Tips untuk Menghemat Energi!

Why oil companies are banking on the ice caps melting

By now, it should be common knowledge that the ice caps are melting due to an increase in the Earth’s surface temperature. Blockbuster Hollywood movies and proponents of global warming have offered us one apocalyptic scenario after another. Ice ages. Tsunamis. Super-storms. However, one demographic may actually be banking on the ice caps melting: big oil.

According to a report filed by the U.S. Geological Survey, an estimated 13% of the planet’s reserve of unperturbed oil, and 30% of natural gas, sit beneath the once-thick sheath of Arctic ice. Oil executives are salivating for a chance to begin drilling operations. Nations, too.

Russia has already dispatched a fleet of submarines to explore the North Pole. Amy Crawford, a writer for Smithsonian Magazine, says China is next in line.
"China obviously does not have any Arctic coastline. Their northern border is about 900 miles from the Arctic Circle. But they are seeking influence."

In order for China to get in the game, they’ll need support from Canada, one of their main suppliers of crude oil. But if Canada does throw their support behind the Chinese, the move could damage relations between Canada and their neighbor to the South, the United States.

The U.S. and Canada are currently vying for control of the Northwest Passage, a direct sea route to the North Pole that, thanks to global warming, is ice-free for the first time in years. The route is substantially shorter (4,000 miles and 2 weeks shorter, in fact) than the alternative route through the Panama Canal. Obviously, this represents some financial leverage. Canada contends that stretches of the Northwest Passage fall within its jurisdiction, while the U.S. argues that it’s part of international waters. Let the bickering begin!

Russia, on the other hand, controls 100% of the Northeast Passage, giving them a distinct advantage in the race to claim the Artic oil, which is technically ‘up for grabs’. Crawford writes: “In 2007, they (the Russians) actually did this symbolic flag planting where they sent a formerly secret mini-submarine down and they planted a titanium flag. So it sounds like something out of Christopher Columbus' playbook."

Big oil companies are scrambling to compete, but so far have been forced to abandon exploratory voyages due to insufficient technology. Most of today’s tankers are unable to withstand the sub-zero Artic temperatures and vicious winds – issues naval submarines don’t have to consider.

Are oil and gas really worth all the trouble we’re going through? Wouldn’t it be more cost-effective for countries to invest in alternative forms of energy? Why hope that the ice caps melt when we can work towards the solution of a clean, renewable infrastructure? Unless we want to spend our retirements under water…

德国的电力供应商应对腐败负责?

如果您还需要更多不信任公用事业公司的理由,那这儿就有一个,倡导团体BDEW(德国能源与水经济协会)日前声称德国正处于一个重大的税务欺诈丑闻的边缘。

在此之前,德国的能源部门并不是没有出过丑闻。在不到四年前, 他们就曾是为数众多的碳排放交易骗局的牺牲者!



在过去的两个月里,来自巴登-符腾堡州的税收监管部门一直来到了汉堡,就“在能源交易方面存在的增值税骗局”进行讨论,并提供了证据。1,800多家德国电力供应商将会轮流接受彻底的官方检查, 在显微镜下接受腐败活动调查。

但那些被认定有罪的公司是否会受到惩罚呢?还是像华尔街的美国银行家一样,这些能源界的显要人物将逃脱象征性的惩罚?

Attention small business owners: some keys to keeping energy costs down

It isn’t easy owning a small business in today’s age. Expenses like rent, utilities, and inventory are at all-time highs. Even taxes are expected to spike. Conglomerates like Wal Mart squash small businesses wherever they spring up. So, how can entrepreneurs stay afloat in an increasingly competitive economy? By saving money wherever and however possible.


First off, start by educating and motivating your employees to be more energy conscious. Offer incentives to those who cut down on their electricity usage. Throw an Earth Day celebration. Remember – happy employees are hard-working employees. Keeping costs down is going to require hard work on everyone’s part.

Install smart-thermostats to maximize your heating and cooling systems. You’re paying for your employees to be comfortable. Not relaxed in a tropical or wintry climate.

Invest in an ink-jet printer. They use about 90% less energy than their laser counterparts.

Copying machines actually consume the most energy of all the appliances around your office. It takes quite a lot of energy to warm the toner in order to fuse it to the paper. Even when not in use, copying machines tend to waste a considerable amount of electricity. If you’re thinking of buying a new one, make sure it comes with duplex copying capabilities. Utilizing both sides of a page helps cut down on the machine’s usage.

If you have a T12 lighting system, replace it with T8 energy-efficient fixtures. And if you haven’t already, make sure you upgrade your incandescent lights to compact fluorescent lamps. They’ll save you money and last longer.

Speaking of lighting – turn off all non-essentials. Not using the conference room? Why keep it lit? Installing motion-detectors helps keep the lights on where they’re needed.

Do your employees still use bulky desktop computers? Think about exchanging them for laptops, which draw about 1/10th the energy. Prefer looking at the larger screen? Go ahead and plug your laptop into a larger monitor. That will still cut your energy usage in half!

But, if you insist on keeping the desktop computers, have your employees shut off their monitors if they don’t intend on using them for 30 minutes or more. The monitor alone draws about half of the computer’s overall energy.

You know the saying – TGIF! Make sure all computers, printers, copiers, and appliances are switched off or unplugged for the weekend.

Preserve nature or clean up energy: do we really have to choose?

Some cities are being forced to choose between their gorgeous, all-natural views, and a new green energy infrastructure. Santa Rosa and Sonoma in California, U.S.A. are two such cities.

Advocates of green energy call it “reinvesting in the community,” and yes, while boasting clean energy independence would be quite a feat, is it worth the price of admission? Is it worth cutting down forests? Blanketing farmlands? Blotting out skylines?

In Sonoma, a 20-megawatt, 50-acre, $100 million solar-panel system is currently in development. At best, the farm would provide for 10,000 local homes. Only 10,000! At that size, where are we expecting to build future solar farms? On top of one another?

Eventually, our nations will become nothing but ice rinks of black glassy solar panels!

City planners in Sonoma are considering changing zoning regulations to open up thousands of acres of green pastures for green energy projects, including a 23-acre solar farm on 130 acres of grazing pasture just outside of Petaluma. Residents are obviously up in arms about the vote, but unfortunately, have little influence over the outcome.

This tradeoff – nature for technology – is far from breaking news. From fracking to giant wind turbines, ocean drilling to nuclear plants, we’ve been sacrificing our environment for improved fuel-efficiency for decades now. We want lower prices. Convenience. And we’re willing to give just about anything to get it…
